Hu-manity, #My31
CLAIMING YOUR RIGHTS ON THE BLOCKCHAIN
PROJECT
The ‘My 31’ App was created to inform Americans about their personal medical data and how their information was being acquired by pharmaceutical companies. The objective of the app was to raise awareness and create a social movement toward a newly proposed human right “Data as property”.
The app itself acted as both educational content and petition form, It encouraged users to speak about the problem and grow the movement. The design needed to be reflective of the goal to generate energy and attention, so vibrant colours and organic shapes became the primary visuals. Some key elements in the app include animated backgrounds and illustrated visuals.

The work
Hu-manity was a unique app, requiring a unique look. Bold visuals and animated elements were designed to make this app stand out from other health services.
My role in this project involved UI layouts and navigation, the creation of the illustrated elements, and directing the animated sequences.
Product Planning
Feature roadmaps and initial MVP screen layouts were developed after discussing the client's vision and funding goals. User research was conducted before this stage.
KEY ISSUES
-
Users were unaware their data was being sold
-
Pharmaceuticals were purchasing 'anonymized data' that could still be traced back to an individual
-
Users had no way to control their medical data
-
Users felt they would like to contribute to furthering medical pursuits, but they wanted to control how
KEY GOALS
-
Raise awareness around the selling of private medical data
-
Allow users to claim their medical data as their property
-
Incorporate blockchain technology to act as an indisputable record of consent for use of private medical data
-
Users can control and eventually profit from their own data
User Flows
Tying blockchain technology to health data posed many challenges, as crypto is not widely understood, and health data is a very sensitive topic. Many wireframes and user flows were developed to educate the user about the two topics and encourage users to participate in the app to mine 'Hu' crypto.
The primary MVP pages and features were laid out for both iOS and Android. A roadmap was developed for secondary features.
Visual Style
Several themes and styles were proposed for this project. The final visual style consisted of vibrant colours and custom illustrations and animations. The primary 'mascot' is a figure who represented liberty.
A design system was developed following usability standards, which included unique assets for iOS and Android platforms.
HU Coins
The app allowed users to make indisputable records claiming their data as property on the blockchain, which would mint them a 'Hu' coin. This meant that the 'Data as property' movement could capitalize on the excitement and virality of crypto.
Users could also mint a new HU coin by completing tasks within the app, such as claiming the 31st right, sharing the petition, and making viral 'claim' videos. They could then use these coins for retail products on the HU swag store.
